In 1990, le Conseil supérieur à la langue française (the High Council for the French language) and l’Académie française (the French Academy) made a spelling reform which concern thousands of words. This reform is not mandatory. The new spelling and the old one are both considered as correct.

About the spelling reform of 1990 : Wikipedia (en), Renouvo (fr)

Although these rectifications have been modest, the reform is very controversial in France and not very widespread. Most of people only use some of these spelling rectifications and are likely to consider the others as spelling mistakes. To try to comply to every preferences, we created 4 dictionaries which follow differently the reform:

  • «Classic» dictionary
This dictionary offers only the classical spelling, which is used in most of books (sometimes old-fashioned).
  • «Reform 1990» dictionary
This dictionary offers only the new spelling, which is not always very used.
  • «Modern» dictionary — recommended
This dictionary offers mostly the classical spelling and some of the new spellings which are not controversial and widely used. This is the French language as it is written nowadays. We strongly recommend to use this dictionary, especially if you are not a native French speaker.
  • «Classic & Reform 1990» dictionary
The classical spelling and the new one are both considered as correct by this dictionary.

typo

"Dictionnaire «Réforme 1900»" should say "Dictionnaire «Réforme 1990»". Same for "Dictionnaire «Classique & Réforme 1900»". I assume the typo exists only on this page.

Confusing Instructions...

I'm confused by the fact that it says to pick «Classique & Réforme 1990» in French and «Moderne» in English. I'm unclear as to why there is a «Moderne» Dictionary in the first place, when there's already «Réforme 1990». I don't want to be spelling Joual.

The “modern” dictionary

The “modern” dictionary is advised for foreigners, because the French spelling reform is controversial and not mandatory. Since few years only, it is teached to pupils (not everywhere I have heard), and a lot of adults don’t know what it is, even if they often use the modern spelling without knowing it. Besides, those who know the reform does not always agree with it. Even dictionaries do not agree about this reform.
Foreigners should not care about that. The “Modern” dictionary is the classical spelling with some evolutions which are not controversial. :)

Real spelling check

I download and installed other extensions so I could check my French text but those wouldn't work. This one did, and it worked great. I really do recommend it.
