EuroOffice Map Chart is a new chart type integrated into OpenOffice.org Calc and through the Sun Report Builder into OpenOffice.org Base that makes it possible to visualize geographically related data. Showcase your statistics over detailed maps of the world!

Can you map more than a single column?

A mapping module for OpenOffice : an excellent idea.

I just downloaded and installed the extension for Win XP. Installing was easy.

Now I work with my own data set to see whether the extension works ok.
The data consists of 29 rows of country data & 3 columns
First column: name of country (in English)
Second column : % of email users
Third Column: % of chat users

The resulting map is a mess : http://monsite.orange.fr/kgmft
Is it possible to have two variables shown in the same map? I guess so, but how?

Concerning the map wizard:
The preview doesn't preview the sample data.

And : The text in the help file provides help for functions I see nowhere: more functions, different data levels, borderline data sets. Where are this functions available ?

I strongly support you to continue your work, as a mapping module really lacks. But either I don't understand how the extension works, or the extension seems to "perfectible".

I'm glad you are interested in our extension and that you had no problems installing it. I hope I can help you with using it too!

As much as I can tell by the screenshot you have selected "Data in columns" instead of "Data in rows". I find these terms a bit confusing myself, but this is the same dialog box OpenOffice.org had for charts (before the introduction of the new chart module in 2.3). I can tell if I have selected the correct one by looking at the "First row as label"/"First column as label" checkbox -- if the first ROW contains the labels for the variables then the variables for a country must be in a row as well.

Note that the first number for the country will be used for coloring it and only the second and later numbers will be used for the pie or bar subcharts. So to best represent two variables, leave the first column after the country name empty and put the two numbers for the country in the second and third columns after the country name. This will leave the countries colored white (depending on the color scheme selected) and add pie or bar charts for the two variables. When using pie charts the size of the chart will indicate the sum of the variables.

Concerning the preview: You are right, the preview is only for the color scheme and the subchart type. Drawing the maps takes a few seconds and so the preview is handled with prerendered bitmaps instead. If we manage to speed up the rendering we might introduce true previews in a later version.

The help file is actually for the (soon to be released) Professional version. While it can be considered a sneak preview and a great marketing move I think it is a mistake and we will release an updated help specifically for the free version in a future update. Sorry about it!

Request option to import GIS polygons

MapChart is a great idea and it would be a real worldbeater ... and pull Open Office with it if you could import .shp polygons into Mapcahrt like you used to be able to do with older versions of excel..

Its great for mapping data if you cant use GIS..

I'm happy to announce, that the latest version of EuroOffice Map Chart Professional supports polygon import from Shapefiles and SVG files. It is supported via an external application that makes it possible to tweak and manage EuroOffice map databases.

We are in fact working on an easy to use import tool that will handle various input formats! Thanks for the encouragement -- it sounds like we will also have users :).
