DeltaXML ODT Compare shows changes in text documents in OpenDocument Format. It performs a detailed text comparison and generates a new document with the changes marked. It is provided as a free Extension for and Oracle Open Office Writer.

DeltaXML ODT Compare works on the underlying XML representation of the document. It has been developed for users working on legal and financial documents who need an accurate and detailed view of changes to text, frames and the content of tables.

A server version with Java API is available for integration into server-side enterprise systems. The DeltaXML ODT Compare API options provide full control over many more comparison features.

DeltaXML ODT Compare:

  1. Shows changes in headers and footers
  2. Shows changes to list numbering
  3. Shows changes in 'frames' which are areas of text positioned on a page
  4. For tables, shows the changes within the cells of a table (unless the changes include changes to column or row numbers)
  5. Marks added or deleted graphics
  6. Large documents can be compared (provided sufficient memory is available)

This comparison tool is offered free for individual users. Enterprise users requiring support or access to a programmable interface (API) should contact us at

We welcome bug reports and other forms of feedback on the DeltaXML ODF Support Forum, in addition to comments here.

Note: You will need to restart your Open Office application before using the extension.

It only works on the Vs 1.1 ODT file format, and OO Writer now uses Vs 1.2.
A waste of our time.

Downloaded Version 1.3 of this extension, installed it in my OOo 3.3.0.

Extension Manager says it is installed, but it's nowhere to be found in Writer!

And I searched EVERYWHERE: toolbars, menus, "Add-Ons", Tools, Options, Help... nothing!

A dozen other extensions from various extension writers all installed and usable without a problem, DeltaXML is the only one that does not show up in Writer.

Win7 Home Premium 64-bit SP1

One other thing, all other extensions have buttons for Deactivation and Removal, except for dictionaries that have only a padlock.

DeltaXML has only a Removal button, and that does not work (I tried).

UPDATE: I installed the extension a second time, but this time using a different choice. Instead of clicking "Get It" and then accepting OpenOffice as the standard application, I downloaded the .oxt file this time and then dragged and dropped it into OpenOffice. This time it installed as it should have the first time and it is now available in Writer.

Still haven't managed to get rid of the first, failed installation.

Excellent! Thank you for fixing this! The system didn't notify me of your change - I just happened to see it now when looking to see if there was an update. Thanks!

Thanks! Looking forward to trying this, but I get an error while installing - "Could not create Java implementation loader". OOo 3.2.1 release (m18) with Java included in the installer on Win 7 64 bit.

When I attempt to install v1.2.0 in OOo-dev 3.3.0 (DEV200m83 (Build:9511)) I get an error:

( {{Message = "bad root element in file:///Users/~/Libraray Application Support/OOo-dev/3/user/uno-packages/cache/uno-packages/XIHP_/DeltaXML-OdtCompare-1_2_0.oxt/Addons.xcu.mod", Context = ( @0}}

What can I do to fix this?
Thank you

Hi Al,

Thanks for pointing this out. We have now fixed this problem with a new 1.3.0 Release. Sorry for the delay.

Shalom to the developers,

This is a terrific add-on for the OO suite. Unfortunately, I've been able to confirm on two machines running OO 3.2 in English, that once enabled, DeltaXML causes Language Tool 1.0 to stop functioning. Is this a known issue? Is it caused by a fault with DeltaXML or with Language Tool?

Thanks again! It'd be great if this could be addressed.

Hi Ezra,

Thanks for pointing this out. We have now submitted a new release (1.2.0) which fixes this issue. The LanguageTool developers have verified that their extension works when installed on the same system as this new release.

Many thanks,

Thanks so much!

Dear DeltaXML-Team,

thanks ever so much for this!

Not only tables are perfectly compared now, but also changes in images are shown.
Also, the comparison algorithm for normal text is better than the one of the built-in comparison feature, which often shows whole text blocks as changed instead of the individual word that was changed.

I think this extension in fact resolves Issue 16398 which has been up since 2003!

Thanks again,

I tried DeltaXML ODT Compare, but unfortunately it quit displaying the error message: "An error occurred during the comparison. Error message: A pipeline error occurred during styles.xml comparison".

How to solve this problem?

Best regards

Hi Gerald,

Many thanks for downloading our extension. We would like to resolve this issue but we will need more information, such as the input files or a stack trace to be able to debug it. We have a forum on our website which we would like to use for support issues such as this one. If it is convenient, please could you repost the question in the ODF section?

You could also try using our online ODF comparison service which can be found here. It may provide you with more information about the cause of the problem.

Many thanks,

Excellent extension. Although a window warns you that it might not work after OpenOffice 1.1 release, I found it worked perfectly with OpenOffice3 on an iMac using OX5.

In a trial I set it, it found two hundred-and-three word and eighteen punctuation variations, comparing two 11 page documents in 2.1 seconds.

Highly recommended.

Thanks for your kind words and performance report.

At DeltaXML iMacs and Macbooks are our development platform of choice so we're keen to make it work on MacOSX particularly the new OOo 3.0 Aqua release.

The warning message isn't refering to OOo 1.1, but to the ODF version (as released by the OASIS standards body) which in reflection many OOo users may not be familiar with. We'll give that warning message a rethink. But for background:

OOo 2.4 = ODF 1.1
OOo 3.0 = ODF 1.2 (draft)

There is a new option setting in OOo to control the output version (1.2 by default, but 1.1 available).
