The Sun Presentation Minimizer is used to reduce the file size of the current presentation. Images will be compressed, and data that is no longer needed will be removed.
The Sun Presentation Minimizer can optimize the image quality size. Presentations designed for screen or projector do not require the same high quality as presentations designed for print.
Object Linking and Embedding (OLE) objects are useful during the presentation design phase but they are up to twice the size of a regular image.
The Sun Presentation Minimizer can replace these OLE objects with images without any quality loss. In addition to reducing the file size, the Sun Presentation Minimizer can remove speaker notes and hidden slides so that you do not publish confidential information by mistake.
The wizard summarizes of all of the changes that will be made to your presentation, and gives you an estimate of the file size reduction.
Note ! The Sun Presentation Minimizer also works on Microsoft PowerPoint presentations.

A very simple howto in spanish
Hey there,
Just to let you know how much I like this extension,
so, I made a very small "howto" in spanish for end_users,
Hope this helps spanish talking people (as me) to understand and use the Minimizer,
here is the link:

Question and Bugs
OS: Windows Vista 64bit
OOo version: 3.2.0
I have a question regarding the operation of the extension. I want to be able to minimize my presentation while I am building it. I use large hi-res images in presentations and Impress gets very slow to work with and save after a few slides are added. I have noticed that the file size reduces each time I run the optimizer on the same presentation. Is this further degrading the image quality?
It would be great to be able to choose the specific pictures or slides that the extension would optimize.
Bug 1: The automatic extension option does not work. No extension is added to the end of a file when the "Duplicate presentation..." option is selected.
Bug 2: The lossless compression option for graphics does not work at all. If it is selected then the options selected for lossy compression are used. This is shown in the final Summary window.
Version for OOo-linux-x64
Is there a chance to get a version for OpenOffice.org 3.x (64bit) for Linux-x64? Many systems are running now 64-bit-OS and use a OOo-x64. It's sad that we can't provide such a usefull extension to this customer.
I hope someone has an idea how to create the 64-bit-version.
See below...
See the comment below. There are x64 versions available at that link.
Updated versions
There are more versions available at http://go-oo.mirrorbrain.org/stable/
Works fine with OOo Impress 3.1.1 / Linux x86_64.
There's no x86_64 binaries available on this page, but I found a Sun Presentation Minimizer x86_64 package for OOo 3.1.1 on MIB repo (for Mandriva). Wonder why it doesn't show up here ?
Anyway thanks a lot !
* Settings are readible and allow me to find the best size/quality scenario :)
* Watch out the smallest settings as it *does* pixelise the images
* Watch out some image with a "halo" arround them with smallest & medium settings
stops after setting preferences
After a smooth installation I immediately tried out the extension.
Everything's ok, but after clicking on duplicating presentation on the 5th step in the wizard the windows remains greyed out and stops working.
I use OOo 3.1 with Vista.
TIA

Doesn't work on Linux-64 with OOo3.1rc2-x64 or OOo3.1rc2-i586
I tried to install it on my openSuSE 11.1-x64, but that didn't work. First I used OOo3.1rc2-x64, but I'm not able to install the extension. It sent me a message box: wrong system. If I used OOo3.1rc2-i586 with Sun-Java 1.6-i586, I can install the extension. But the minimizer assistent crashed at the last step and the crash reporter started.
Headless mode?
Is it possible to run the extension in headless mode?
Also is there any known routine that could be added to break down metafiles?
Path too long under Windows when installing this extension
See http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=95684
Bug: Metafile Texts change colors!!!
After minimization, text colors in embedded metafiles partially change!!!
How to reproduce:
(1) Make a drawing containing texts in Draw, copy & paste it as GDI metafile into Impress Slide.
(2) Minimize, then some text colors (expecially after parentheses and line feeds) become white.
Can't install extension
Hi,
I'm using Ubuntu Hardy in OOo 2.4.1 and everytime I try to install the extension I get a "Loading component library failed file:///home/kaiser/.openoffice.org2/user/uno_packages/cache/uno_packages/wFBPhp_/Presentation-Minimizer.oxt/SunPresentationMinimizer.uno.so".
(I changed the name of the file to "Presentation-Minimizer.oxt")
any ideas?
KX.
only 32bit binary
The linux version contains only the 32bit binary. So, I get the same error above with 'SunPresentationMinimizer.uno.so'. I tried to anonymously download the CVS source but couldn't figure out what the pserver or path is (help would be appreciated!). Anyway, I found a 64bit binary for openoffice 3.0 and Fedora 10 on pbone.net. I only have openoffice 2.4, but I force installed it (rpm -ihv --nodeps) and it works great under Fedora 9.
Same here
I'm having same problem, running ArchLinux. It started with upgrade from 2.4.0 to 2.4.1, so I guess it's a problem with this version.
This is a wonderful tool, a must-have. I hope it gets fixed soon.
I confirm the same problem
I confirm the same problem (using Ubuntu Hardy and oOo 2.4.1) using the Linux version, which already ends in .oxt. It's no less a mystery to me either, and I'd sincerely like to use it.
STLport dependency seems to be the problem
It looks like the problem is that the openoffice.org in ubuntu no longer depends on STLport while this extension has been compiled with that dependency. I could, however, get the version in ubuntu repos to work fine (openoffice.org-presentation-minimizer).
Crashes OO.org 2.4
This plugin is causing Impress to crash when I attempt to use it with the OpenOffice.org 2.4 packages shipping with Fedora 9.
good working
Good working.
Thank you for your report.
Did your update the extension before the error? If you did, you needed to back up the ShellCommands module. You don't need to make a back up of the menu settings when updating the extension.
If you didn't, this might be a problem. Could you check the ExecuteComand_WXPDWYEZUB is there in the ShellCommands module inside. Choose Tools - Macros - Organize Macros - OpenOffice.org ... entry and then expand My Macros and mytools_BookmarksMenu, and select "ShellCommands" module. Check is it in the list.
No icon continued ...
I've fixed the problem. There were missing components so I reinstalled the open office. The extension is working fine. I love it!!!
No icon!!!
I can't find any icon or shortcut on the menu bar to sun minimizer. I am sure that I have installed the plug-in correctly but still I can't find it on the commands list. Can anyone advise me on this!
Thank you very much
Excelente, muito bom
Permite diminuir o tamanho das apresentações sem grande trabalho.
Parabéns!

Minimizer for Writer
Great tool! Woulld be even better if we could use this tool to reduce Writer documents:
- remove cropped area's of images
- reduce resolution for images that are scaled down
- remove external OLE linkage
- remove external Image linkage
This could make large Writer files much better workable.
If Sun is not providing a Writer version, can someone point me to the source code (extension was released under GPL but I can't find the source).
Minimizer - image opitmizer for Writer - ODT texts
Yes, would be so great for Writer too!
So, anything new on this topic?
Best regards, Arsène
Source code for minizer
the source code for the minimizer can be found at http://graphics.openoffice.org/source/browse/graphics/sdext/source/minim...
Doesn't do anything
I could have sworn I'd used this extension in the past but it doesn't seem to be working now.
When I click on the Minimize Presentation button I get a popup dialog that says:
Steps
Clicking on any of the items in the list doesn't do anything. I'm not sure what to do from here.
openoffice.org-impress-2.3.0-6.11.fc8
great tool, long missed
a really good tool for professional presenters .. i compressed some presentations from ca. 100:1 (containing a lot of pics)! especially for bigger presentations it saves a lot of time, not to check and fit every page manually :)
p.s. it works great for me on current version (do not use older ones ;) for winxp and suse linux
Linux amd64
Does anyone know how to get it to work on Ubuntu 7.10 amd64? I would love to use this as I do a lot of presentations with ooimpress at the school where I teach.
Didn't work
Maybe I've missed the obvious, but the Minimize toolbar was greyed out and so I couldn't minimize the PPT. I tried this with two different PowerPoint Presentations, PPT files, and with neither could I use this extension.
I am running OOo on Win XP. Would love it to work...
Cheers.
toolbar greyed
it did it to me on xp ooo 2.3.0. I upgraded in 2.3.1 and it works
Excelent extension
It would be nice to have it also for writer documents, at least ability to reduce size of images. Than it would be extension No.1 for me.
20 : 1
I just compressed 60 MB Powerpoint down to 3 MB - that's cool.
