This extension helps you to semi automatically insert pictures stored in a database to your document. It offers a workaround to the Issue 18651 which limits the use of MailMerge, so it cannot handle pictures.
It was designed for the following procedure:
1. create a file using mailmerge, but use only the name (path) of the pictures you want to insert. To identify these 'to be inserted' images use special delimiters (eg. {{picturename}})
2. convert these inserted filenames with one button click to the actual image itself

You can change several parameters through the options dialog:
* front and back delimiters you want to use, to identify the filenames of the images
* a default picture to be inserted if the filename/path doesn't exist
* the root folder/URL where the pictures are stored
* several resize options to manipulate the inserted images (eg. fixed hight; fixed width; etc.)

I have been using this addon as an essential part of my work office suite for about 5 years. Absolutely brilliant! When Microsoft Office would not allow me an appropriate control of my mail merge (in order to produce technical certificates/reports for sets of calculations) OpenOffice delivered. In addition, the Word mail merge claimed to import images, but did not acknowledge a bug which meant that for many it simply did not work. This work around in OpenOffice was a life saver! Pity it is not incorporated in the main code.

Thanks for the nice workaround, rather a pity the developers at OOo don't seem to want to fix the problem though
